Memento

Right now, one if the best films I have ever seen is playing in select cinemas across the country. That movie is Memento.

Memento is the story of a man with no short-term memory. This is like saying Star Wars is “some space movie.” Basically, you see the entire film through the eyes of the main character, Leonard (played by Guy Pearce.)

I don’t want to give away too much of the plot, but here’s the background. Leonard was once an insurance claims investor living a relatively normal life. He and is wife are attacked one day in their house. His wife ends up getting killed and Leonard is left with an injury destroying his short term memory.

Leonard comes up several ways to remember what’s going on in his life and his progress in finding his wife’s killer. He takes notes all the time, uses a camera to take pictures of people he meets and tattoos important facts about the killer on his body.

I don’t want to say anything else in fear of spoiling the film. Guy Pearce does a terrific job as Leonard. The movie also stars Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano, actors that both appeared in The Matrix. The acting is top notch, putting the performances of the stars in summer blockbusters like The Mummy Returns and Pearl Harbor to shame. At it’s core, Memento is a movie about how your version of the “truth” can be far off the mark of you choose to trust the wrong people.

Rating: 4 ½ stars
